Abbie Allison

Before studying abroad, Abbie never imagined that traveling overseas would truly be within reach. Growing up, she had always dreamed of exploring the world, inspired by her dad’s stories from his time teaching in Germany. Still, she believed opportunities like that were reserved for students with significant financial means. “I always thought that it was just out of my reach,” she shares. That perspective shifted when she arrived at the University of Alabama, where encouragement from her advisor helped her realize that studying abroad was possible. Her experience in Vienna ultimately transformed her undergraduate journey, opening doors to international career connections while allowing her to live in a place she had long dreamed about.
From studying at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime to navigating daily life in a new country, Abbie discovered that growth comes from stepping into the unfamiliar. Traveling abroad for the first time pushed her to develop independence in ways she never expected, learning how to manage money, travel safely, and even pick up some German along the way. One of the highlights of her experience was visiting Schönbrunn Palace, where she explored the historic grounds, wandered through the rose gardens, and enjoyed coffee at the Gloriette.
For students considering studying abroad, Abbie’s advice is take the first step and explore your options. I know that, as a first generation student, this process can seem incredibly overwhelming. However, the resources at your university and through the Annexstad Family Foundation are some of the most important parts in the process of getting across the sea.
