Where did you study abroad?
Costa Rica
Why is / was studying abroad important to your undergraduate experience?
Studying abroad is important to my undergraduate experience as it brought me new perspective regarding daily life, energy access, sustainability, and experiences I wouldn’t have been able to get in the classroom or online. In addition to opportunities to be immersed in Latin American culture and live with a homestay family.
How did you select your study abroad program?
I selected my study abroad program as it related directly to my passion for sustainability and my prior knowledge of Costa Rica being 98% dependent on renewable energy. I have had Spanish classes and was excited to practice in person in a place I never visited before.
How did you grow during your study abroad experience?
I grew during my study abroad experience with technical skills like surveying for research, speaking and writing in Spanish, and studying geography and history in a new way. Moreover, I was able to grow my soft skills with regards to overall creativity, communication, public speaking, rapport-building with professionals, community members, and learning how to understand family dynamics within my homestay. Lastly, I was able to build confidence in living and studying in a country I have never been to before.
What was your favorite excursion as part of your study abroad experience?
My favorite part of studying abroad was connecting with my homestay family, especially my homestay sister, Chelsea, and playing soccer with her. I also loved visiting renewable energy sites in person, staying on sustainable farms, and spending a few relaxing days at the beach in Manuel Antonio.
What advice would you offer other AFF scholars who are interested in studying abroad?
Absorb everything you can from the culture, people, and experiences around you! Remember that you’re a guest, so approach the wildlife and environment with humility and respect. Take risks and be open to pushing your limits—you won’t have this experience again. Build connections along the way; you might fall in love with the places you visit and feel inspired to return someday.
