College of Saint Benedict
Psychology with a Global business minor – Graduation May 2026
Where did you study abroad?
Sevilla, Spain
Why is / was studying abroad important to your undergraduate experience?
I wanted to learn how to speak Spanish and with my general requirements I had to pick between Spanish and business. Determined, I told myself that I would learn Spanish as much as I could at college and keep furthering my education of the language which is why I ended up in Spain! I also wanted a chance to see the different of way of life in Spain (and Europe in general) and see if there where psychological differences in quality of life in residents.
How did you select your study abroad program?
By choosing a place that would further my Spanish knowledge but also based on past student experiences here.
How did you grow during your study abroad experience?
I still am!! But every day I’m learning a little bit more about Spanish slang and Spanish in general. Along with learning to adapt to situations and relax!!! America is so fast paced and full of pressure that just isn’t that same here. People don’t expect you to be doing a million things at once it’s so refreshing. I am also learning how to be away from friends and family and meet new people but learn how to be independent in a foreign country.
What was your favorite excursion as part of your study abroad experience?
I’m not sure yet! It’s barely begun. We have two excursions coming up in Granada, Spain and Lisbon, Portugal which I am very excited for. However just getting to be here is something amazing in itself.
What advice would you offer other AFF scholars who are interested in studying abroad?
DO IT! I’m not going to sit here and tell you everything is sunshine and rainbows every day. The first week is a really hard adjustment and some days I still get hit with a wave of sadness missing family and friends. Yet, being in the digital age makes talking and calling much easier and allows for less of a disconnection. I think study abroad is a great opportunity to branch out, meet new people, try new things, and above all expand your view allowing you to see things from a multi-facetted perspective.
