She’s always been supportive and proud of me,” Andreus says. He is active both academically and as a member of the Indiana Marching Hundred Band. “I’ve met many people and had amazing opportunities I wouldn’t have had without being in the band.”
LFT Scholar Cassidy Witt (’25) aims to makea difference in medicine as a Community Health major. “I hope to help people struggling to get the medical help and education they need,”Cassidy shares. “I want everyone to receive equal treatment and opportunities.” As a first-generation college student, Cassidy dreamt of attending IU and has flourished. “I would have been a third-generation farmer. I always knew from a young age that I was going to college.”
IU selects LFT Scholarship recipients and collaborates with campus leadership in development, financial aid and admissions to create a Scholar community and provide holistic support. To date, six LFT Scholars have graduated from IU, and nine are currently enrolled, studying fields such as Nursing, Biology, Broadcast Journalism and Neuroscience.
The AFF Scholar cohort continues to grow, and Cassidy and Andreus o_ er insights for fellow Scholars. Cassidy advises, “Do not give up when it gets hard. You’d be surprised at what you can do when things are tough. It’s easier to take a small break than to give up on everything you’ve worked so hard for.”
Andreus adds, “Do not be afraid to talk to new people. I was really shy, but I’ve grown. College is hard! Don’t compare yourself to your peers too much. Be proud of what you’ve accomplished and don’t be afraid to share your achievements, no matter how small.”
