Where did you study abroad?
Madrid Spain
Why is / was studying abroad important to your undergraduate experience?
Studying abroad exposed me to a gorgeous culture that I would have never seen had i not stepped so far out of my comfort zone. As someone who had not traveled much prior to this experience, I gained a much more expansive view of how our differences contribute to our contributions to our societies and to the world.
How did you select your study abroad program?
I sought to improve my conversational Spanish skills and explore different cultures. Having rarely traveled before this experience, I thought that a six-week summer program in Spain would allow me to improve my language skills while still immersing myself in a new culture.
How did you grow during your study abroad experience?
My appreciation of different cultures expanded significantly and my goal to become a better global citizen has increased. From exploring Spain to traveling through Tunisia, studying abroad taught me how to further appreciate our global perspectives and how our diverse experiences shape our understanding of the world.
What was your favorite excursion as part of your study abroad experience?
As a part of my program, we traveled to Mallorca, an island off of Spain, where we climbed to the top of the Cathedral of Mallorca, visited the Rafa Nadal Museum, and the Drach Caves. Mallorca itself was beautiful and it was very exciting to be able to do so much while visiting the island.
What advice would you offer other AFF scholars who are interested in studying abroad?
I would strongly recommend studying abroad! Although it may be slightly daunting at first, you will likely make strong relationships with people in your program or with the locals you interact with. Additionally, there is somethings so special about learning and observing how daily life may look different to different people based on the culture and community they represent.
