“My journey is a testament to the power of resilience, vision, and evolution. As a first-generation college graduate, my story began with a simple but profound determination: to forge a path different from my family’s and to redefine what was possible for myself and future generations. My initial dream of becoming a lawyer served as the catalyst for pursuing higher education, but over time, my aspirations and understanding of success transformed into something far greater than individual achievement.
Growing up, I knew I wanted more than the life my family’s circumstances had afforded. I wanted to break the cycle and create a new narrative. For me, that new narrative began with education. Inspired by a childhood fascination with justice and a desire to advocate for others, I set my sights on becoming a lawyer. The idea of law represented empowerment and the ability to make a tangible difference. With unwavering determination, I worked hard to excel academically, and thanks to the generosity of the Annexstad Family Foundation, I was able to attend Gustavus Adolphus College on a full scholarship.
The opportunity provided by the Annexstad Family Foundation was life-changing. It wasn’t just financial support; it was an investment in my future that I will forever be grateful for. My college experience was enriched by many opportunities, including studying abroad in both India and Egypt. These experiences were transformative. Traveling to these countries not only broadened my world view but also gave me a deep appreciation for the incredible opportunities I had to rise above the circumstances I was born into. Those journeys shaped my perspective and instilled in me a profound sense of responsibility to use my privilege to make a difference.
While my initial plan to become a lawyer shifted, the lessons I learned during my college years became invaluable stepping stones in my career. I realized that the skills I had honed—critical thinking, effective communication, and a commitment to hard work—could be applied in diverse ways to create impact. These realizations led me to a successful career within the Department of Veterans Affairs, where I climbed the ranks to an executive leadership position.
For me, the definition of success has undergone a profound transformation over the years. When I was younger, success was about achieving a career milestone and proving to myself and others that I could make it. It was very much about individual gratification. I found immense pride in my accomplishments, from earning my degree to establishing myself in my career. But as I gained experience and assumed greater leadership responsibilities, my perspective shifted.
Today, my view of success centers on the impact I have on others. Success is no longer about what I accomplish alone. It’s about how I can influence and develop the people I lead and the lasting impact I can make. When I see someone I’ve mentored achieve their goals, that’s when I feel the most fulfilled.
Looking back at my college experience, I emphasize the importance of remaining authentic. One of the best pieces of advice I can offer to current scholars is to stay true to who you are. Focus on honing your strengths and studying something that truly brings you joy. That authenticity will guide you to the right opportunities and help you find fulfillment both during and after college.
My evolution from aspiring lawyer to transformative leader underscores my belief in the importance of adaptability and lifelong learning. I have taken my experiences and channeled them into a mission to inspire others, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds, to dream bigger and work harder for a better tomorrow.
If my story can show even one person that they can overcome their circumstances and redefine success for themselves, then I’ve accomplished something truly meaningful. My journey continues to be a beacon of hope and a powerful reminder that success is not just about where you end up but the lives you touch along the way.”
