Biology – Graduation Spring 2026
Where did you study abroad?
Greece
Why is / was studying abroad important to your undergraduate experience?
That study abroad trip was important to my then major of Classical Civilizations. It was important to my undergraduate experience because it put me in an unfamiliar position that encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone. I grew a lot as a person while I was there and learned a lot. I think that stepping out of my comfort zone was one of the best things I could’ve done.
How did you select your study abroad program?
I selected it because it was the only one that was connected to my major. I also knew the professor that was doing the trip, so I was more comfortable with that one than a different trip.
How did you grow during your study abroad experience?
I grew through the relationships I made while I was there. I may not be in regular contact with any of them anymore, but I came to understand that you make friends in unlikely places and they don’t need to stay in your life to have an impact. I went in to it less confident in myself and my social skills, but came out of it more confident in myself and how I experience and deal with new experiences.
What was your favorite excursion as part of your study abroad experience?
My favorite excursion probably getting to go on a pirate ship in Thessaloniki.
What advice would you offer other AFF scholars who are interested in studying abroad?
Talk to the professors leading the program. If you need funding, try to talk to as many people as possible to figure out where there are scholarships available.
