Political Science & Ethnicity, Race, and Migration – Graduation Spring 2027
Where did you study abroad?
Paris, France
Why is / was studying abroad important to your undergraduate experience?
Exploring new parts of the world and fully immersing myself in different lifestyles, languages, and cultures has always been important to me. Attending a college with strong study abroad programs was, therefore, essential. Studying abroad as an undergraduate, in particular, allowed me to grow both personally and intellectually as I gained a deeper sense of independence, broadened my perspective on various types of societies, and navigated cross-cultural experiences in a foreign country. Moreover, the academic focus of the program provided me with valuable insight into how educational systems function in other parts of the world.
How did you select your study abroad program?
At Yale, I was already taking French courses when one of my professors mentioned that she would be teaching an advanced Yale French course in Paris during the summer of 2024. She encouraged our class to apply, and I did!
How did you grow during your study abroad experience?
Studying abroad in a country where I was not fluent in the language pushed me to grow in several ways. First and foremost, I had to learn how to be independent in a foreign environment, navigating a city where I did not know anyone or the layout. This included figuring out how to use the bus and subway systems, as well as solving personal challenges on my own. I also had to rely on my French speaking, listening, and comprehension skills when ordering food, making purchases, or interacting with strangers. By the end of the program, I felt comfortable navigating the city and communicating with French speakers! Academically, I made significant progress in all areas of the French language and was proud to finally hold long conversations in French.
What was your favorite excursion as part of your study abroad experience?
Spending three days in Arles, France, with beautiful sunny weather, visiting historic buildings and the Van Gogh Museum, taking a cruise tour of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, and relaxing on the beach eating strawberries was my favorite part of my study abroad experience.
What advice would you offer other AFF scholars who are interested in studying abroad?
Do not let anxiety or fear about being in a new environment, especially in a new country, prevent you from discovering new parts of our beautiful world. Growth comes from leaving your comfort zone, and learning a new way of life, culture, and language is an unforgettable experience. There is truly so much to see outside of your home and country, and this will expand your global perspective and experiences in ways you never thought possible. Take the risk; you will return with hundreds of photos, lasting memories, and a deeper understanding of the world and yourself 🙂
